Army Staff Sgt. Kiernan was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 5th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas. Kiernan was shot by a sniper when his unit came in contact with enemy forces using small-arms fire during combat patrol operations. Christopher grew up in Virginia Beach, Virginia and graduated from First Colonial High School in 1988. His unit went to Iraq in October and he was on his second tour. He was planning a visit home in July so he could be with his wife. Donna, on her birthday. In two years, he would retire from his beloved Army and planned to buy some land in San Antonio and, hopefully, he and his wife would adopt a child. The couple enjoyed fishing and traveling together. They were animal lovers with two dogs and two cats. He and his wife shared a very unique bond – he was the love of her life. They married later in life and when they found each other, they knew they were meant to be together. Christopher’s fellow soldiers called him a soldier’s soldier who looked out for his men. Even after he was shot and lay dying, he still wanted to take care of his men. He was worried about their safety and warned them to look out for themselves.
