Sgt. Shawn M. Dunkin moved to Alleghany County as a child. He graduated from Alleghany High School in 1999. He joined the Army a year later and served his first tour in Iraq in 2004 with the Texas-based 4th Infantry Division. He enlisted as a tanker in the mechanized unit but soon switched to infantry scout because he wanted to be closer to the action. He planned to make the Army his career but had decided to leave the military when his enlistment ended. He previously deployed to Iraq with 3rd Battalion, 66th Armor Regiment in 2003. He is a graduate of the Warrior Leader Course. His awards and decorations include the Purple Heart, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Noncommissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, Combat Action Badge and the Driver Badge. He is survived by his wife and parents. He was 25.
