Mr. Thomas was killed Monday, Sept. 13, 2004, near Baghdad, Iraq, when a bomb detonated at his post. He was 29. He was in the Army for seven years and was assigned to the 1st Calvary Division. He had learned about computers and had hoped to find a civilian job in that field to support his wife and three children. He was born in Detroit and went to Metro Detroit schools. He attended Robichaud High School in Dearborn Heights before moving to Phoenix, Ariz., to live with his father, Carl Hankerson. He graduated from Marysville High School in Phoenix in 1993. Mr. Thomas had served since April in Iraq.
