Sgt. 1st Class Glen J. Whetten, 31, of Mesa, Ariz., died March 12 near Kandahar, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked his vehicle with an improvised explosive device. He was assigned to the 1st Brigade, 1st Infantry Division, Fort Riley, Kan.
SFC Glen Jacob Whetten was born March 19, 1978 in Nuevo Casas Grandes, Chihuahua, Mexico, and was raised in Phoenix, Arizona, attending Roosevelt Elementary Schools and graduating from South Mountain High School. He proudly enlisted in the U.S. Army following his graduation. His service included being among the first to enter Iraq with U.S. forces, four and a half years as a Ranger Instructor, and his most recent deployment to Afghanistan. Jake was intensely patriotic, and was always determined to protect his fellow soldiers and defend American liberty. Survivors include a daughter. The family is deeply grateful to all who have honored Jake and offered comfort, assistance and prayers for his loved ones.
