Army Pvt. Rodriguez was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 18th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, Schweinfurt, Germany. Rodriguez died when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle during combat operations. Damian was a native of Nogales, Mexico and was a 2005 graduate of Pueblo High Magnet School in Tucson, Arizona. While in high school, he was on the school's drum line. Friends say he was the king of comedy, a master of wisecracks and wacky antics. He would try to come off as a tough guy, but he was really softhearted. After joining the military for college money, he seemed to be very happy about his decision. He was so proud that before he left for Iraq, he paid a visit to his old high school to show off his uniform to the office staff. Damian believed he was making a difference and had applied for citizenship. When asked why he was going to Iraq he said, "So I can put low rider rims on the tanks." He was confident he would return.
