Major Frederick V. “Rick” Watkins III, 35, of Virginia Beach, Va., died on March 3, 2001. Rick passed away in the tragic air accident in Dooly County, Georgia, while on active duty. Mr. Watkins was in the U.S. Navy LANTDIV. He was a member of Virginia Beach Christian Life Center, the American Society of Civil Engineers, the National Society of Professional Engineers, and 203 RHF – Red Horse Flight Virginia Air National Guard – Chief of Engineering. He is survived by two sons, Joshua Frederick Watkins and Colton Steele Watkins, both of Virginia Beach; parents, Fred and Iris Watkins of Virginia Beach; two sisters, Karen Solis of Virginia Beach and Gail Fewell of Indianapolis, Ind.; a brother, James Watkins of Tampa, Fla.; nieces and nephews, Daniel and Eric Solis, Zachary Watt, and April Watkins. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, March 13, 2001 at 11 a.m. at the Virginia Beach Christian Life Center, 1000 North Great Neck Road, Virginia Beach. Pastor Steve Kelley and Chaplain Lt. Col. James Bradfield officiating. Interment Rosewood Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Major Peter Garner, Virginia Air National Guard, 192 F.W. – F.M.A., 50 Falcon Rd., Suite 34, Sandston, Va. 23150, for a scholarship fund. Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Bayside Chapel in charge of arrangements.
