Lance Cpl. Joe M. Jackson, 22, of White Swan, Wash., died April 24 while conducting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan. He was assigned to 1st Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, Calif. He was born at St. Joseph Hospital in Tacoma, Washington. He was killed in action by an Improvised Explosive Device in the Sanjin District, Helmand Province, Afghanistan on April 24, 2011. Joe was a member of the Gila River Nation and shares the same blood line as WWII Iwo Jima flag raiser, Corporal Ira Hayes. Joe was killed by the enemy in a foreign country but was never alone. He was amongst friends when he died and has been escorted home by a fellow Marine every step of the way. Joe was received by his family upon arrival in Yakima, WA on Monday, May 2, 2011. He is survived by Billy L. Pace, Lydia Soren, four brothers and one sister, a large extended family, and by his foster parents, Shawn and Faye Marceau.
