1st Sgt. Mendez enlisted in the Army in October 1987, is from Brooklyn, N.Y., and reported to Fort Hood in January 2002 and deployed to Iraq in November 2004. Bobby was one of four children of Puerto Rican parents. He graduated from Murry Bergtraum High School in Manhattan and joined the Army in October 1987. He was a career soldier who grew up in Brooklyn, NY. Mendez, who was assigned to the 4th Infantry Division in 2002, had earned the Kuwait Liberation Medal awarded to soldiers who participated in the 1991 Persian Gulf War, according to Debbie Stevenson, military editor of the Killeen Daily Herald outside of Fort Hood. He also earned the Southwest Asia Service Medal with Bronze Star for meritorious service. He is survived by is wife Jennifer, two daughters, Thyiena, and Chyanne, and a son, Quentin. He was 38.
